The famous Route du Vin in the Alsace in Eastern France
The Alsace could easily be among the top 10 most scenic regions of Europe. It’s got everything: lovely cities and villages, beautiful panoramic views, green vineyards, picturesque architecture, history and amazing food. This is the perfect Easter getaway, and as usual we thought about everything, including 2 nice hotels in the center of Colmar, a guided tour through the city, a full day tour along the Alsace Wine Route and even a visit to Metz, one of Northern France’s most beautiful cities with a stunning cathedral.
The comfortable VanHool TopDeck coach where everybody sits on the upper deck, one of our favourite buses.
We depart on Saturday morning around 07h30 with a 4* luxury coach. The coach has reclining comfort seats, an on-board toilet and a video system with 3 flatscreens. We serve you some complimentary drinks & snacks along the way. We stop in Luxembourg to stretch our legs and for a coffee before we continue in the Southern direction towards Épinal on the Moselle river.

From Épinal we’ll cross the Vosges mountains and stop for a few hours in Gérardmer, a lovely city where Expat Club enjoyed some nice days of skiing in January. It’s time for lunch, a walk along the lake and some first souvenirs shopping. Mid afternoon we continue our journey towards the Eastern part of the Alsace region. While leaving the mountains we immediately end up between the lush vineyards of the wine route. Only a few kilometers into the valley we arrive at our final destination, the beautiful city of Colmar. We first check-in to our hotels (see below) before we head to the city centre.
Our two local professional guides will show us around the stunning city centre of Colmar for 1,5 hours. The history of this city dates back to the 9th century. Needless to say that a lot can be told about this place, but rest assured you will hear it all from the guide while walking along the typical Alsatian houses. We namely use a digital audio guide system so you don’t even have to stand close to the guide while you take another picture!

After the guided tour we’ll go to a typical local restaurant for a nice meal. There are various dishes to choose from and you can indicate during checkout whether you would like to join and (if already known) what you would like to eat. We always choose places with good food and affordable prices. Our joined lunches & dinners are also an excellent way to meet new people and to have a really good time.
Of course you can optionally end the evening with us in one of the local bars before returning to the hotel. We advise you not to make it too late though because we have got another big day ahead!
On Easter Sunday we discover some of the most beautiful places along the famous Alsace Wine Route. This route runs through a major part of the region from Strasbourg in the North to Thann near Mulhouse (border with Switzerland) in the South. Along this route you find dozens of amazingly beautiful villages with the typical Alsatian houses. Also today we will have a tour guide with us (same person as Saturday) who will tell us about the regions history, the different villages, and the Alsace wine and the vineyards. Just sit back, relax and enjoy the ride. Well, at least between the various stops that we make a long the route.
Koenigsberg Castle overlooking the valley
One of the stops will be at the Koenigsberg Castle. Built on the most Eastern hills of the Vosges mountains, this castle overlooks the valley and the wine region. On a clear day you can even look over the Rhein river, all the way to the Black Forests mountains.
You can expect the following during this lovely day on the Alsace Wine Route:
Trip by 4* luxury coach
2 nights accommodation in a 3* hotel
Guided city tour in Colmar by local expert
Guided full-day wine tour in the Alsace
Visit to a beautiful medieval castle
Visit to winery caves (+ tastings)
Endless vineyards producing delicious wines
Monday 17 April On Easter Monday we travel back to Brussels, but of course we do so with a stop in the ancient city of Metz. The origins of this city date back an amazing 3,000 years and has been continuously inhabited since 400 B.C. Through the millennia it was Celtic, Gallo-Roman, the Merovingian capital of the Austrasia Kingdom, the cradle of the Carolingian dynasty and the beautiful Gregorian Chant (click below), as well as one of the oldest European republics.
Today it is the capital of the Lorraine region and it still forms the crossroads of major international axes, such as Paris-Frankfurt and Luxembourg-Lyon. With well over 400.000 inhabitants in the metropolitan area, including 55.000 students, Metz belongs to France’s 25 largest cities. No doubt this is the cherry on top!
We will again enjoy a guided tour here with 2 local guides. They will guide us along the major monuments, including the stunning cathedral with its extremely high buttresses. Inside you find exceptionally large and beautiful stained glass. Not to spoil the
We’ll be returning to Brussels around 21h00 on Sunday evening.
Needless to say that Easter is an exceptionally busy and expensive weekend when it comes to hotels. However, we did it again. We arranged rooms in two hotels on the edge of the old town. Perfect location! You can choose between the comfortable 3* Kyriad Hotel Centre Parc des Expositions (5-6 minutes walking to the centre, Booking.com rating 7.2) and the 4* luxury hotel Mercure Unterlinden (just 2 minutes walking, Booking.com rating 8.2).
Kyriad Colmar Centre des Expositions
This hotel is at just a few minutes walking from the inner city center. It has clean basic rooms with two single beds. These rooms are primarily meant for participants who want to share a room with a friend or with another lady or gentleman to avoid the single room supplement. You can also stay here if you would like to stay in a single room, but note that we only have “twin rooms” with 2 single beds here (supplement €70). Breakfast can be added for €10 per person per day (so €20 in total).
Mercure Colmar Unterlinden
This 4* hotel is right on the edge of the old city center of Colmar. It has very comfortable rooms with a large double bed. These rooms are primarily meant for singles or couples. There is a surcharge of €65 for this hotel, based on 2 persons sharing the room. We do not have twin rooms here, so room sharing is not an option unfortunately. If you would like to stay here alone, there is a surcharge of €155 (total hotel + single supplement). A very good buffet breakfast can be added for €17,50 per person per day (so €35 in total).
This trip is also great for families. We recommend it not below 6 years of age though. We would like to ask you to contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org if you have any questions or would like to know the price for a family (including one parent + 1 child). We will certainly be able to make a special price.
