Antarctica speaks to the imagination. It is in a way literally the end of the world. The white continent has no permanent inhabitants, although between 1.000-4.000 scientists live there, and increasingly more tourists visit this desolate land every year. Expat Club considers organising a trip to Antarctica early 2020. We cannot give you any specific details at this moment, except that it will take at least 2 to 2,5 weeks of your available holidays and that it will be a big investment. Surely our Antarctica itinerary will start in the city of Ushuaia in the Southern tip of Argentina, Tierra del Fuego. Here you will board a cruise ship that sets course for Antartica and possibly some of the other islands on the way (e.g. Elephant Island, the South Shetland Islands and Deception Island).

Transportation
We don’t know yet whether we organise a group flight to Buenos Aires and Ushaia, leave it fully up to you to get to the tip of South-America, or offer both options (organised, self-organised). We also don’t know whether we take a cruise ship both ways across the Drake Passage (the sea between Cape Horn and Antarctica), or offer a 1-way flight and 1-way cruise to/from the Antarctica. Neither do we know what kind of cruise ship we take and what rooms we can offer (inside or outside berths).

Route & price
This Antarctica trip is far from confirmed. We just know that many of our members dream of going to Antarctica, so we would like to gauge the interests in the number of people who are seriously interested in making a commitment to such a one-in-a-lifetime trip in terms of time and money. There are many cruise routes from Argentina to Antarctica, such as with stops at the Falkland Islands, South Georgia, Elephant Island and Deception Island, as well as several stops on the destination continent. The longer, the more expensive. Although prices vary a lot, you should keep in mind that this cruise with expeditions will costs probably at least €10.000 and up to €15.000 per person and would take about 2-2,5 weeks in total (there are actually many cruise options for €20.000 or more). If you travel alone we highly recommend finding a friend to join us because the single-surcharge to have your own private cabin will be significant (think €3.000 to €5.000 more). It’s just what it is… travelling to this continent is incredibly expensive.

Dates
The travel period is also unknown, but if we go then we are aiming for the first 2 months of 2021. The time at sea would be at least 8 days, but likely a few days longer. It will take at least 2 days to get from Europe to Ushuaia. So you should reserve at least 14-16 days for the trip, excluding staying in Buenos Aires or Santiago de Chile (most people fly through there).

Pre-registration
For this trip we will likely only offer 20-25 spots. To know how many would like to join, and to ensure you can join us, you can now pre-register.  This is for free and comes without any obligations. So if you are interested to know more and always wanted to travel here, just write your name and email in the fields above and we will inform you when the trip opens up for reservations. Additionally you will be able to benefit from a special pre-registration discount. For sure we will organise at least one presentation about this trip when we have a better idea of what the trip is going to look like, so you understand better where we are going and what to expect.
