Today we travel to Antwerp to discover the city’s Urban Art Scene with an actual street artist. During a two hour walk he will show us some of the most special works that can be found on the buildings, parks and other city elements. You will learn about their meaning, the artists, the techniques and their impact. Maybe urban art is not “your thing” but we would like to invite you to join us to widen your horizon and to understand better why urban artists do what they do.

Antwerp Streetart

Antwerp is full of street art, and you’ll be surprised with how beautiful, large or special some of the works are (see this article for instance, in Dutch). Tim Marschang is well-known in the urban art scene of Antwerp and he knows the best works like the back of his hand. He will take us through the city on a guided tour and tell us all about the works of course, but also the artists and street art in general. It’s the perfect introduction to the second half of the day.
Banksy - logoIn the later afternoon we continue our journey into the world of street art by visiting the acclaimed exhibition “The Art of Banksy”. It’s awesome. It’s guaranteed 100% original, and guaranteed 100% unofficial, as the website says.

Our trip

We gather at Central Station at 10h20, in the main hall under the large board with all trains. Our train leaves slightly after that. There is no need to buy a ticket, we’ve done that for you. Upon arrival in Antwerp we immediately start the guided tour. At the end of the tour we take a small break and reconvene at the Banksy exhibition. Your ticket is already included in the price, so no need to stand in line or reserve in advance. We got you all covered!

About The Art of Banksy

From January 14 until March 19 the Shopping Stadsfeestzaal will fall under The Art of Banksy. The work of the world’s most famous – or most notorious – street art artist has been brought together by the artists’ former manager Steve Lazaridis.

Banksy

Bringing the historic streets of London to the steps of Antwerp, the exhibition will take visitors on a sort of journey, exploring the questionable genius of the world’s most infamous street artist with a retrospective of over 80 of the artists’ off-street masterpieces. Most famously known for his stenciling technique, Banksy’s artwork combines dark humor with underlying political messages and social themes, which have made him one of the biggest contemporary artists of our time.Banksy 05

More than eighty works by the controversial artist will be shown in high-tech display installations in The Art of Banksy. The works come from Lazarides’s own collection and other private collectors. All pieces included in The Art of Banksy exhibition are original works and limited edition screenprints by Banksy himself, which are all unique in their form. The Art of Banksy explores the enduring relevance of Banksy’s work outside its original context and provides considerable food for thought.

What the exhibition does not do is reveal who or what Banksy is. Is he a lone artist? Is it a collective? These are questions that have intrigued the art world since the early 1990s. How does the British Banksy manage to pop up all over the world and rock the establishment with the humorous, politically-slanted and sometimes provocative works he places in public spaces? Generally by using stencils to spray images and messages on walls, but also by hanging his own works in museums under the curators’ noses, as he did in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the British Museum in London.
