The beautiful Côte d’Opale begins just two hours away from Brussels. This French coastline received its name for its bright iridescent light and stretches out 120 kilometers South from the Belgian border. The 40 kilometers between Calais and Boulogne sur Mer are the most spectacular. That is the part we are going to discover today. Besides wonderful wide sandy beaches, rolling hills covered with yellow flowers, and lovely little towns, it is known for the spectacular viewpoints Cap Blanc Nez and Cap Griz Nez. With a distance of just 35km you can wave to England from there. We top this with visits to the Vauban-ramparts town Gravelines, the “Art Nouveau” resort town Wimereux, and the historic walled city Boulogne sur Mer. This is truly a superb day out!
You can optionally join a 14km hike from Cap Blanc Nez to Cap Griz Nez, a true classic! It leads over both capes, along the coast, over the beach, through a nice resort town and rural roads. About 50% of the group normally does this, so you will certainly not walk alone. The rest of the group will stay a bit longer in Calais for lunch and time on the beach, watching the ships go by from the world’s busiest ferry port! You cannot go wrong and you can always change your mind last-minute to do one or the other.
