Rotterdam City & Port of Rotterdam
Trip by 4* luxury bus
Today we visit one of the world’s largest industrial areas, the mega harbour of Rotterdam in the Netherlands. This port was the largest in the world virtually the entire second half of the 20th century. You need numbers? It stretches out almost 50km from East to West, and since a few years far into the North Sea as well. It covers 106 square kilometres. The total of dry bulk, break bulk, liquid bulk and containers totals a gigantic 469 million tons per year (including 3.5 million containers). This cargo is brought in by almost 30.000 large sea ships, and transported to the hinterland by well over 107.000 inland vessels. Not to mention that the Port of Rotterdam also houses the world’s largest refineries, welcomes the world’s largest ships, boasts the world’s biggest crane, and is home to the world’s largest storm surge barrier with the world’s largest hinges (quite literally 2 Eiffel towers on their sides).
But Rotterdam is much more than the port alone. The city itself is Holland’s second largest after Amsterdam and is known for its modern architectural highlights fused with its naval history. Today we will therefore not only enjoy a long tour through the harbour area with an industrial expert guide, but also see the city itself. This time we extend the tour with several hours compared to the previous editions, so you will see much more! We begin the afternoon by ascending the 185m high Euromast, followed by tour around the city, and end with an interesting river cruise along the city’s highlights and the (still impressive) busy older parts of the port. Next we visit the majestic former Grande Dame of the famous Holland America Line: the SS Rotterdam. And we close the day with a very nice dinner (optional) in the magical atmosphere of Hotel New York. We made this trip several times between 2014-2016 and can confidently say that our participants totally loved it. In fact, it’s still our founder’s favourite daytrip, and this time it is even better! So come and expand your horizons and join us to Rotterdam.

Rotterdam (650.000 inhabitants) is the second-largest Dutch city after the capital Amsterdam. It was founded in 1270 when a dam was constructed in the river Rotte. As we will discover today, its maritime and port has been important through the centuries. During WWII it was destroyed to a large extent and many people died. After the war it was built up again quickly, and throughout the decades Rotterdam became what it is today: an architectural gem. In the afternoon we will discover the city centre with various landmarks, such as the Central Station, Weena with Hollands highest building, de Market Hall, the cubic houses and the Erasmus bridge. A professional harbour and city guide will stay with us the entire day, so be prepared to get the best tour you can imagine in this incredible city.
Secure terminal visit
Standardised containers are one of the world’s most important inventions for international trade. One large ship often holds 10.000 or more of them. Since Expat Club collaborates with an official industrial harbour guide, we are allowed to take our bus into this highly secured area and see the operations from very close. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and is much more fascinating that you probably can imagine. Our guide worked in the Rotterdam Harbour for many decades and knows all ins and outs, including the crazy anecdotes. Alternatively, we may visit an equally fascinating dry-bulk (iron & coal) terminal where thousands of tons are processed for further transportation.
Both areas are highly secured and one cannot enter without an official permission from the Port Authorities. If you are joining, you must send us the following: your official name as in passport or travel I.D. and its number. We need this for each passenger, including your friends or child(ren) if you plan to take them. Please send us an email after your reservation with the following information. Write the last name in CAPITAL. For instance: John SMITH – HK787325ST or Gabriela Anna CORTES SANCHEZ – JK47892B23. During the day you must take your ID card!
After our visit to the SS Rotterdam we will be walking towards Hotel New York in the hustle and bustle of “De Kop van Zuid”, an urban renewal project that made this former harbour area into one of Holland’s most amazing places with high rises, conference centres, a cruise terminal and of course the iconic Hotel New York that has been there for many decades. This is truly an amazing place with a one-of-its-kind atmospheres. A perfect place to have dinner and to finalise our trip in style of Rotterdam’s centuries old naval history. Here is what is on the menu:
Shrimp, mushroom or Iberico ham
Steak with herb butter
Haricots verts, beans, and peas
Pommes ‘Pont Neuf’
roasted colliflower, potato croquetes & cherry tomato-olive vinaigrette
(menu not known yet)
Tiramisu with amaretto
One drink + coffee / tea
The price of this menu is €49,95 and must be pre-ordered during the reservation process. If you want to change your selection you can do that by sending us a simple email. Note that we cannot last-minute add you to the list because this place is packed on Saturday evening.
We will be travelling with a comfortable 4* luxury coach from Lauwers Reizen. The seats are configured in Princess Class, which means you will have extra leg space and can recline your seat. This way you can get some extra rest. All seats have footrests as well. There is a (small) toilet on-board and a DVD system with three flat screens, so we can show you a fascinating documentary about the SS Rotterdam during our outbound trip and a lovely movie on the inbound.
